Two USGS houseboats serve as home base for biological monitoring and extended monitoring efforts. Houseboats can provide basic living facilities and eliminate travel time during extended field sessions. Other benefits include an onsite laboratory and 24-hour data collection and monitoring.

The houseboat, (R/V Marjorie Douglas) is a 50 ft aluminum custom-built Clark Boat with 22 inch draft, 200 gallon freshwater carrying capacity, and a 10-day field range. This boat is a 15 ton durable facility with an environmentally-friendly incinerating toilet, a wetlab, clean lab, and housing for a 4-person crew.

The R/V Marjorie Douglas is primarily used for research including mangrove fishery monitoring and turtles. The small houseboat is used for deployement of a Submersible Habitat for Analyzing Reef Quality (SHARQ).
