Oyster bars develop in estuarine environments, contributing to changes in tidal flow and the depostion of sediments. They also form a substrate used by other plant and animal species
Severe storms may knock down the trees and flood hammocks, leaving behind a thick layer of debris
Marsh sediments fill the pockets of exposed limestone,
providing a foothold for colonization by salt-tolerant
species such as the glassworts (Salicornia spp).
The shallow roots of the read cedar cling precariously to the exposed limestone
surface beneath a coastal hammock.
