INTRODUCTION

This study is part of cooperative investigations managed by the Sea Grant Consortium conducted from 1993 to 1997 by the U.S. Geological Survey Center for Coastal Geology (USGS), Coastal Carolina University, College of Charleston, Clemson University and the University of Southern Carolina. Areas of study include inland and offshore waters and adjacent terrain throughout much of central South Carolina coast. South Carolina's central coast and inner shelf (to 10 m of water depth) from North Edisto River to Bull's Inlet has a complex Quaternary history of transgressive and regressive sedimentary sequences. These sequences were identified from 612 line-km of high-resolution single-channel seismic profiles, side-scan sonar mosaics, 81 vibracores, ground penetrating radar, Amino acid racemization, and compilation of previous investigations as part of the continuing multiyear cooperative. This presentation focuses on the Quaternary sequence immediately offshore of Kiawah, Folly and Isle of Palms barrier islands.
