Third Coral Reef Task Force Meeting held in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
In November Jeff Williams and Jennifer Rahn, 1999 USGS Knauss Fellow, attended the third meeting of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (CRTF) in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The CRTF was created in 1998 by President Clinton in Executive Order P.L. 13089, "Coral Reef Protection," which calls for the conservation and protection of the Nation's coral reefs. Secretary Babbitt and Jim Baker (NOAA) chair the Task Force. Duties of the Task Force are organized around four themes:
To implement the executive order, several working groups were formed to address and develop action plans. The USGS CMGP is a co-leader, along with NASA and NOAA, of the Mapping and Information Synthesis Working Group. In St. Croix the Task Force members were updated on the progress of the five working groups and working plans were submitted. The Coral Reef Mapping Implementation Plan was unveiled and can now be seen on the web. Also please visit our general coral reef Web site (maintained by Laura Friedrich).
