Successful Carbonate Beaches 2000 Conference Held in Key Largo, Florida
The Carbonate Beaches 2000 International Symposium, attended by more than 90 scientists, was held in Key Largo, FL, December 5th-8th, 2000. The conference was the first interdisciplinary scientific conference between engineers and geologists devoted specifically to issues surrounding carbonate beaches. Whereas carbonate beaches occur primarily in tropical regions, they can also be found in high-latitude settings of the world. These beaches differ significantly from the silicate/feldspar beaches found in more temperate climates. Conference co-chairs Lisa Robbins of the USGS and Orville Magoon of the Coastal Zone Foundation of California focused on papers and discussions that addressed science and management issues. Five other agencies co-sponsored the meeting (Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Danish Hydraulic Institute Water & Environment, Association of Coastal Engineers, American Shore and Beach Preservation Association, California Shore and Beach Preservation Association) ensuring a wide representation of disciplines and dissemination of information. Conference proceedings will be published by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The two-day meeting on Wednesday and Thursday was followed by a field trip on Friday to examine carbonate beaches in the Florida Keys and Miami Beach.
