Data - Lidar Acquisition

High-resolution airborne lidar systems can map hundreds of kilometers of coast in a day with the density of elevation recordings exceeding one point per square meter. High point densities combined with sufficient horizontal and vertical accuracies allow for the creation of topographic and bathymetric digital elevation models (DEM) that show details of the coastal environment. Lidar surveys receive positioning control using differential GPS, which requires a base-station receiver on the ground. The USGS sets up base stations near the study area, often augmenting National Geodetic Survey Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS). Additionally, because slowly varying positioning errors can corrupt the data, control points are surveyed for use in identifying and correcting these errors.
