Drill Rigs

The USGS collects sediment cores for investigations into sedimentary deposits and geologic interpretations of seismic profiles. Three basic types of drill rigs are used:

Coring may be conducted from a vessel, from a platform, from underwater, or on land. Core sediments are removed and sampled for analysis.

Surface sediment sampling can be conducted while underway or at location. Bottom samples are collected and analyzed for characterization of habitat and resources.
