      <abstract>U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) staff created geographic information system (GIS) footprints to show the extent of light detection and ranging (lidar) datasets published by the USGS St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (SPCMSC), since 2001. These lidar datasets were published as LAS, XYZ, or Digital Elevation Model (DEM) outputs of coastal, submerged and/or terrestrial topography in USGS Data Series (DS), Open-File Reports (OFR), and data releases (DR). Please see the publications listed in the source information section of this metadata record for details on data acquisition and processing of the datasets included in this data release. Using tools included in Global Mapper (GM) GIS software, polygons were generated to represent the coverage area of data provided in multiple USGS lidar publications. These footprints were later merged into one shapefile containing information about the field activity number (fan), field activity source link (fan_url; added in version 2.0), publication type (pub), publication source link (pub_url), lidar return type (returntype), and year the data were collected (yr_collect) to serve as an easily accessible data inventory. This data release will be updated and versioned, as needed, as more lidar publications are released from the USGS SPCMSC.</abstract>
      <purpose>The purpose of this data release is to provide an easily accessible index of the coverage of available lidar data published by the USGS SPCMSC since 2001, for use by scientists within the center, [federal, state and local] cooperators, and the public. Relating these footprints to field activities and publications allows users to sort by area(s) of interest and easily access the related data from the publication. To view field activity details for any of the datasets included in this data release, the Coastal and Marine Geoscience Data System (CMGDS) can be used to look up the USGS FANs, by replacing the FAN (16CNT02) in the following url: https://cmgds.marine.usgs.gov/fan_info.php?fan=16CNT02.</purpose>
      <supplinf>The lidar footprints dataset (individual and merged) are also available in a web mapping application, known as the St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center Geoscience Data Viewer, for enhanced online visualization. Users can access these data at https://doi.org/10.5066/F7RV0MJP (Williams and others, 2017).</supplinf>

        <procdesc>Data Import, Transformation, Projection, and Mosaic: The DEM, LAS, or XYZ file(s) from each of the source publications were downloaded and compiled. All data were imported, transformed (if needed), projected, and mosaiced in Global Mapper version 18.2. If the source data was published as a DEM, lidar GeoTIFFs were imported into GM with no additional conversion needed. If DEMs were not available from the source publication, then the LAS or XYZ data were downloaded and an elevation grid was created. XYZ data were imported into GM using the "Elevation grid from 3D point data" as the 'Import type'. The "Treat 3rd coordinate value as elevation" was checked, and "-32,767" was set as the 'no data' value. In the "Elevation grid creation options" window, the elevation grid slider was set to "20". LAS data were imported into GM using the "Create an elevation grid for use in analysis" as the 'Import type'. In the "Elevation grid creation options" window, the elevation grid slider was set to "20". If any of the data (DEM, LAS, or XYZ) were published in a different datum or projection than the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS84), the projection was updated to WGS84 using the 'Configuration: Projection' settings window. The newly imported files (DEM, LAS, or XYZ) to be merged were selected and the "Export layer(s) to new file" option was chosen. In the "Select export format" window, the file type 'geoTIFF' was selected with default settings, and the tool was run. The generated file was a mosaic or tiled geoTIFF file containing the data from the publication. These geoTIFFs were used to create the footprints, detailed in the process steps below.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Footprint Creation: Once the mosaic or tiled GeoTIFFs for each publication were created, each file was imported individually into GM. The files to be merged were selected with the 'Layer' tool, "BBOX/Coverages" and "NO - Create Polygonal Coverage Areas" options were chosen. Note: The files from a single publication were generally merged together, even if there were multiple FANs represented. In a few cases, the data coverage areas within a single publication were in disparate locations so they were not merged. After running the tool, a footprint of the lidar data was created and exported as an Esri shapefile (.shp). This process was performed for each dataset and the shapefiles were named using the FAN(s) and publication information. After the individual footprints were created, extraneous fields were deleted from the shapefiles. This step was performed to ensure all footprints contained the same fields, allowing them to be merged. The only Esri-specific fields retained in the attribute table from the individual footprint shapefiles were the 'FID', and 'Shape' fields.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>Shapefile Table Attribute Updating: Shapefiles were imported into ArcMap version 10.6, where fields were added to the attribute table that provided pertinent information for each footprint shapefile. Five fields, 'fan', 'pub', 'pub_url', 'returntype', and 'yr_collect' were added to each of the footprint shapefiles and populated with the appropriate information from the originating publication. For every individual footprint shapefile, the multiple features (polygons) were merged into a single polygon, where possible, using the 'Merge' tool in the ArcMap editor toolbar. Due to overlapping geometries and/or geometric gaps, some individual footprints could not be merged to a single polygon. In those instances, the footprint was merged down to the fewest number of polygons possible. Afterwards, the 'Merge' tool in ArcMap was used to merge the individual footprint shapefiles into one shapefile. Please see the Resource_Description section of the metadata for a list of all the individual shapefiles used to create the final, merged lidar footprint shapefile.</procdesc>

        <procdesc>KMZ Creation: Lastly, a Keyhole Markup language Zipped (KMZ) file was created, in addition to the individual footprint shapefiles and the merged shapefile, using a model created with ArcMap's ModelBuilder. A folder containing all the shapefiles (individual and merged) was set as the input dataset in the model. Then the "Iterate Feature Classes" iterator was pointed to the folder so the model would run through all the shapefiles contained within the folder. Next, the "Make Feature Layer" tool was connected to the iterator to create a new feature class for every shapefile. Then the "Layer to KML" conversion tool was connected to the new layers. The output KMZ file was named "%Name%.kmz" to keep the native name of the files in the converted format. The model was validated and run, creating a .kmz file for each of the individual lidar footprints and the merged footprints.</procdesc>
