The cruise took place September 4th to 26th, 2015.
In a collaborative effort between U.S. and Canadian scientists working on ocean acidification, seawater samples were collected from the Davis Straits on the R/V Atlantis. Davis Strait connects the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and Baffin Bay. The flows through the CAA are integrated at the Strait making it an ideal gateway to observe the interaction between the Arctic and the North Atlantic. The rapidly changing polar environment including melting sea ice, surface warming, enhanced transport of warm water from the south, and the Greenland ice sheet melt can influence air-sea CO2 flux, nutrient cycles and ocean acidification. During the cruise, Lisa Robbins (USGS) and Jonathan Wynn (USF) collected seawater DOC, pH, pCO2 , and oxygen isotopes using underway systems. Kumiko Azetsu-Scott and her team (Bedford Institute of Oceanography) collected seawater samples from the water column for analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity, pCO2 and methane, oxygen, nutrients, transient tracers (SF6 and CFC-12) and oxygen isotopes. Underway pCO2 and phytoplankton and zooplankton information were also collected.
