Sarasota Sidescan-Sonar Mosaic

Sarasota Sidescan-Sonar Mosaic

This image was developed by creating a mosaic of sidescan sonar images. A sidescan sonar is a surveying instrument that utilizes a sonar signal to create a highly detailed map of the bottom surface. In this image, light grey areas (high-backscatter) correspond to coarse shelly material or hardgrounds. Dark grey area (low-backscatter) correspond to fine, beach-quality sand. Notice that the fine sands are concentrated in long, linear ridges, and in the ebb-tidal deltas off of tidal inlets.
