Historical and Recent Coastal Bathymetry Data Nearshore Ship, Horn, and Petit Bois Islands, Mississippi

By Noreen A. Buster, Owen T. Brenner, and James G. Flocks

Summary

Historic, recent, and present day bathymetry data sets were compiled and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were created to further compare changing bathymetry over several time periods. This work was completed in cooperation with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Mobile, Alabama and the National Park Service (NPS) as part of the Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP). Data sets include 1916 through 1920 soundings collected by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey as downloaded hydrographic sheets (H-sheets) and some digitized soundings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 2008 to 2009 soundings collected by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) St. Petersburg and Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Centers (SPCMSC and WHCMSC respectively), and 2016 soundings collected by the SPCMSC in the nearshore environment of Ship, Horn, and Petit Bois Islands. The goal of the effort was to broadly characterize subaqueous morphologic change both spatially and temporally. This USGS Data Release includes the: 1) processed 2008 to 2009 USGS elevation point data (xyz), 2) digitized bathymetric soundings (xyz) from downloaded H-sheets (NOAA), 3) DEMs for 1916 to 1920, 2008 to 2009, and 2016 (2016 xyz data can be downloaded from DeWitt and others, 2017), and 4) bathymetric change maps comparing the DEMs. For further information regarding data collection and/or processing please see the metadata associated with this data release.
